Interview prep: questions this posting points to

Written from 8 current Data Engineering postings on Microsoft's own careers page — not questions Microsoft has asked.

  1. Walk me through how you'd design a service that moves large volumes of data from various source systems to target systems with minimal latency, while also exposing a data-centric orchestration layer on top. What are the key components you'd need?
From the posting: “designing, building, and operating a next generation service that transfers large volumes of data from various source systems to target systems with minimal latency while providing a data centric orchestration platform”
  2. You're on-call for the Fabric Materialized Lake View service. Customers start reporting that their dashboards show stale data even though the system says the view refreshed successfully. How do you investigate?
From the posting: “Fabric Materialized Lake Views, which automatically refresh analytical data in Microsoft Fabric so customers can query up-to-date results without manual pipelines”
  3. Tell me about a time you owned a component end-to-end—from requirements through development, testing, deployment, and post-deployment support. What was the hardest part?
From the posting: “Owning the components and driving them end to end, all the way from gathering requirements, development, testing, deployment to ensuring high quality and availability post deployment”

Overview

The Windows + Devices Fundamentals team improves the reliability, performance, responsiveness, battery life, memory efficiency, and overall health of Windows devices. We build and operate the services, telemetry systems, and data pipelines that transform signals from labs and the installed base into trustworthy metrics, actionable diagnostics, and measurable engineering improvements. We are seeking a motivated Software Engineer to contribute to data-driven systems that reveal how Windows devices behave at scale. You will work with experienced engineers to build reliable backend services and data pipelines, analyze product-health signals, and deliver improvements that advance Windows Fundamentals across devices, silicon, and customer segments.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities

Contribute to Windows Fundamentals metrics, queries, cohort definitions, and measurement workflows across reliability, performance, responsiveness, power, battery life, memory, and storage. Develop, test, and maintain well-scoped components of backend services and data pipelines for telemetry ingestion, transformation, orchestration, storage, monitoring, diagnostics, and engineering workflows. Apply sound engineering practices for service reliability, security, compliance, observability, data quality, deployment safety, and operational support. Analyze telemetry, diagnostic signals, and traces, with support from experienced engineers, to identify trends, anomalies, regressions, and customer impact.

Investigate data and service issues using debugging, statistical, and performance-analysis tools; document findings and contribute to engineering actions. Build automation, dashboards, alerts, and diagnostic workflows that detect issues earlier and reduce manual engineering effort. Collaborate with team members and partner teams, participate in design and code reviews, and continuously develop technical expertise in services, data engineering, and Windows Fundamentals.
