Interview prep: questions this posting points to

Written from 8 current Engineering postings on Amazon's own careers page — not questions Amazon has asked.

  1. Walk me through how you'd design a GenAI-based test tool that multiple independent teams across Amazon could plug into for their own testing pipelines. What would the extensibility points look like, and how would you avoid it becoming a one-off script that only your team can use?
From the posting: “design and develop GenAI tools, frameworks and testing infrastructure to facilitate the testing by multiple teams and Amazon business. This includes analyzing requirements, assessing testability, identifying automation opportunities and implementing them for projects where the work will be run by multiple businesses in parallel.pen_spark/ ... for projects where the work will be run by multiple businesses in parallel.pen_spark/ ... facilitate the testing by multiple teams and Amazon business.pen_spark/ ... pen_spark/Design and develop GenAI tools, frameworks and testing infrastructure to facilitate the testing by multiple teams and Amazon business.pen_spark/Lead effort towards simplifying test tools and technologies in terms of efficiency, effectiveness stability, extensibility, and scalability.”
  2. The HR conversational AI assistant starts giving employees confidently wrong answers about a leave policy that recently changed. Walk me through how you'd triage and fix this in production.
From the posting: “driving the operational fundamentals (accuracy, latency, quality) that earn employee trust”
  3. The Payroll and Freight postings talk a lot about 'ambiguous problems' and 'solving complex problems, applying appropriate technologies and best practices.' Tell me about a time when you had to turn an ambiguous or fuzzy requirement into a clear technical solution.
From the posting: “You will solve ambiguous business problems and map them to elegant technical solutions”

The Detail Page is where Amazon customers decide what to buy. Every day, hundreds of millions of shoppers land on a product page to discover, evaluate and compare products and offers on mobile, desktop and app, and this surface drives the majority of purchase decisions on Amazon. The Detail Page team builds that experience, along with the platform that lets hundreds of partner teams across Amazon ship features to the page safely and quickly. We are reinventing how the page is built, moving to a modern federated architecture and making AI agents a first-class part of how we design, test and ship software.

As an SDE II, you will own the design and delivery of significant features and services on one of Amazon's highest-traffic pages, where every millisecond of latency and every point of availability matters to customers. You will work on real distributed-systems problems at a scale few places can offer, see your code reach customers worldwide within days, and help shape the technical direction of a page that nearly every Amazon shopper sees. If you love building for customers at massive scale and want your work to matter on day one, we would love to hear from you. Key job responsibilities * Design, build and own features and services end to end, from requirements and design through launch and operations. * Build for scale, writing high-quality, well-tested code that is fast, reliable and safe to deploy on a tier-1 customer surface. * Improve latency, availability and operational health, and take part in on-call, especially through peak events like Prime Day. * Partner with Product, UX and partner teams across Amazon to turn ambiguous ideas into shipped, measurable customer experiences, and use experiments to prove impact. * Contribute to the evolution of the Detail Page architecture, and use AI-native tools and agents to speed up development, testing and operations. * Review designs and code, mentor junior engineers, and help raise the engineering bar across the team.
